"Everyone should practise an artform
because no matter how good or bad, it will enrich the soul.' -Kurt Vonnegut
Maiia: Art and craft forms match and reflect aspects of self as well as personality. The burly bully who can't stand flowers may have has a real soft spot for an articulate turn of phrase; the dignity and solidity of brilliant words well delivered.
Abraham Maslow originator of the most useful HIERARCHY OF HUMAN NEEDS. I introduced the word personality as it relates to ego. The desire/need to be recognised and validated is for real.
Maslow describes self-actualization as a person's need to be and do
that which the person was "born to do." - "A musician must make music,
an artist must paint, and a poet must write." ROBERT BLY CARL JUNG JAMES HILLMAN - author The Soul's Code
In some way there is a call to destiny. The arts may present a picture that seems to make more sense than reality. Something for ME
Many students encounter psychological stumbling blocks to attaining a higher degree of craft, skill and participation. Punter:"I'd like to paint" - Maiia:"Here's a brush - pick a colour, any colour." Who will take the brush and grin? Who will say - I can't because..." it's impossible to predict. Children are usually straight into it no worries.
Validation and peer recognition and are genuine human needs. JUDGELESS EVALUATION
The Why Not?- can be an important ground to explore for beginning students. Fear of ridicule and rejection become engrained and disabling.
I CAN'T - "I haven't got enough money, time, brains, talent, verbal, looks, physique, education, confidence, social status,." etc' . Excuses are as numerous as the positive affirmations, the solutions and reasons why.
Where there is a will there is a Way!
