Maiia The idea for the sun rays comes from a squid carving I saw in a photo of my mother / Maori Women's Welfare League went to an opening...
We had Stevie Wonder's- Natural Wonder in the workshop and it has woven into the story. Ribbons in the sky and ribbons through the water, with fluidity, continuity and embracing arms in opposite corners. "As above so below." The natural light On Earth as it is in Heaven. Bridging Heaven and Earth Ribbon in the Sky- Five 1.m panels
The Narrative Behind the Image
"This candle is really going to be burning for the joy that we've experienced in the past, the sorrows and pains of the past, for the joys that we've experienced today and are experiencing today in those sorrows and pains and the energies of love and positivity of all those times as we burn a candle for tomorrow" - Stevie Wonder -Detroit 1984.
A meditation on past present and future. Good times and good living in a post-colonial diaspora. Carrying not the cold but 'a candle for tomorrow"
Maiia: I painted this piece while homeschooling on author C.S Lewis and The Chronicles of Narnia. In one book Lewis has Reepicheep the warrior mouse row off in faith the "furtherest East" which I happen to know something about.
Further into the creation Reepicheep is parked up under a mango tree in panel two. Later still he disappeared altogether from the picture. I was wondering at the minds of the Europeans that they carried the cold of England with them - why did they go roads and fences and banks when they could have been relaxing, fishing and gardening. Grateful for the wonderous fertile world of warmth and plenty. Even after naming that part of Aotearoa -POVERTY Bay Whangara - where The Whalerider was filmed
This work followed Hope -also with a sun theme. It began with the three centre panels - other two added into the design months later. Julian Young "What's with the lion in the rainforest?"
(Cairns) The Aquatic Club billion dollar view of Trinity Inlet an' Dunwoody's gap inspired the hilly, mangrove background. And - False Cape. Ironically the descendents of the good European ancestors who established Cairns with their own two hands and the sweat of their brow, are still without capital - not reaping much from the fruit iof their labour. Same as Indigenous communities. Capitalism isn't rascist - only sees the colour of money.
Larry Cozzi (from Ethiopia) had a yarn - If you come up against it with a lion in the old times - your best bet was to throw him a monkey. The real story behind Tarzan's relationship with Cheetah perhaps. Lol - the real reason they let the 'settlers' go north first. They broke rocks in the hot sun - rich people turn up for 5 star and we get to cook and clean for them. Something wrong in the paperwork!
Hey Maiia! Kia ora Maiia, your art piece speaks of many colours and reminds me of an art piece that was once hanging on the HB Williams Memorial Library, Gisborne. It has that 'Folk' look to it as well, if that's the look you were after (and the style of C. Lewis). Your art piece also has some kind of 60's psychedelic look to it and an exotic pacific look too! Right time for summer and has a dreamy 'once upon a time' look on it. Nice framing by the suns rays too... Tiaki Terekia
