Humour: Do you have a right to sing the blues?
"We live in a world that’s all about making money and having things —big cars, big homes—and you’re running into a conflict. But if you love music, there’s nothing like it. If you’re gifted and you can play it, I wish you well, and just continue doing it. But don’t expect anything, because in the world in which we live, people who are artists, painters, musicians, writers, we can’t expect anything in this world. The way the world is set up, it’s not for us. But it’s not a negative thing. It’s still a wonderful thing anyway. " - Sonny Rollins - All About Jazz -a stunning interview on many subjects
Maiia: "Hi Paul! Australia as a colony, Is capable of producing it's own culture. However we're not getting to do our best work and the investment of billions in sub-standard product could very well stay in the community and the country.
AUDIENCE EDUCATION
"There's quids to be had for sure. LOL! and government's on our side. Sustainability in the arts and culture - Jon Hawkes has summed up the information very tidily in his work of the past ten years -we need to clone him so he can tell everyone. 4th pillar of Sustainability
Artists in Australia make an income primarily from hospitality work, teaching and their arts practise thirdly.
Yarn with Maiia and Paul Green You mentioned earlier- "the shit factory," the pseudo-culture we've been consuming
One of the biggest obstacles we face is noise. LOL!!! .. The Empty Can
Billy French (14) - "You need to think about income Mum. Your works a waste of time!"
Maiia "I'm interested in outcomes, more than income. What about your music? That's a complete waste of time - theres no money in that"
Billy French "I intend to persist in my complete waste of time."
Professor Csikszentmihalyi (Mick in Kinstralian) - "Young people get these commercialised visions of the good life, through athletes, rock singers, actors, actresses and they think - ok these guys have a good life- I want to learn how to be that kind of person. Maybe they know deep down that they can't - but even so 15 % of teenagers expect to be professional basketball players or entertainers or singers because they think its the road to the good life."
Maiia: Lol Prof' Mick talks about how kids love 'pizazz' -he says "Young people look for the superficial characteristics... either that or you become a Mother Teresa, or whatever, you become famous for being poor and suffering but that doesn't attract that many people at that age."
That's another aspect of the shit-factory in operation. That whole glamour thing's an illusion it's just how Sonny Rollins put it- more about beiong poor and suffering -
However- it's changing with the technology and the education that is avaiable today.
Sonny Rollins Interview "What you have to confront if you’re a young gifted musician is what some people call the “real world.” But your music, which is the real real world, that comes first. The world of making a living, putting bread on the table, you meet a girl and get married, support a family. But music takes a lot of time and dedication... more
Michael Hill: "and one of these days our heroes... might get paid while theyre alive."
