Norma McCarthy
" Tropical Australia has EXCELLENT representation in global OUTSIDER ART WORK - Norma McCarthy

With it's roots deep in the shadow regions of the collective unconscious.  Outsider Art is a movement of democracy.

This 70 year old genius Norma, made a name in Far North Queensland during the 1980s when she was making and selling Bush Sculptures - assemblage work from found objects and dried plant matter.  She was represented in foyers and lounges throughout the region and overseas.
Norma opened Port's first gallery, and made her home in Mossman one giant on-going installation - that would become an obsession...

During the 1990s Norma would document the plight of the homeless, visiting Australia's women's refuges and psychiatric departments etc.  Speaking with thousands of Australians marginalised to that 'outsider'  label, and recommending we all use of self-expression and creativity as a healing tool.

Norma Mc Carthy speaks from the inside - Why does this happen?
.

Maiia: "I have been privelaged to work closely with, be a student of Norma's for more  than ten years now.
