in the quest for the white culture in Australia you can't avoid the Catholic icons. Australia was very much 'found'ed by irish labour and migration. The industrial past that shapes Australia today is moulded with an Irish presence. The larrkin is part of an Australian way of being. The irish may also have mixed with Indigenous people from a mutual understanding of mperialist power and deep disgust for the hypocrisy that is bureaucracy and institutionalised power. This history informs the presentwith a hunger for Justice Peace by Peace
Maiia "You look at the traditional local Catholic iconic pieces floating round opshops and it's really dull. There's not a lot of light or joy there.... so i did this piece as it would be done... post-colonial and pre-modern The subject bursts out of a structured illumined manuscript style, as the post-colonial has felt a need to burst out of the failings of institutionalised religion and politics. I feel mine speaks more about Creation as a woman and a mother than these old pieces convey, as an artist i think the image and the message were affected by both the artist, the medium, the tradition and the colonial context. |
