Cedar Bay

Cedar Bay was a village razed police.  In the language of the era (mid 1970s) it was a hippy commune  a den of drugs and immorality.

Regional Queensland has a rich and fascinating colonial history. The story of Cedar Bay is just one part of Cairns rich oral history spoken of on the streets.        MUSEUM OF TRUTH

Cedar Bay's story which broke on the national news, is part of the Qld history that gives the whole state a bad name nationally and internationally, in those days it QLD was very remote country.  For the possibile truths are endless and unflattering.  Just before the Fitzgerald enquiry into police corruption.

Black White or Brindle Cairns community seems to come to one conclusion - what happened to the citizens of Cedar Bay  was wrong.  Some local people say it was part of the lingering colonial oppression and in this case the policies and buracracy of previous era- as they continue to do.

"My view is that unless the black population is speedily absorbed into the white, the process will soon be reversed, and in 50 years, or a little later, the white population of the Northern Territory will be absorbed into the black" - Cecil Cook 1937 -page 11.

"On the morning of 29 August 1976, the inhabitants of the hippy colony at Cedar Bay in far North Queensland were awoken by the WHAP-WHAP-WHAP of a helicopter circling. As it dropped off a few policemen at the beach, they watched. It left, only to return again, and again, and again."
