A healing project to avoid trivialising and dehumanising Cairns. NOT To Build Trauma by creating distress- but in genuine Recognition, Reconciliation and Growth.
Reflecting on Disrememebering - by Prof Earnest Hunter - warning may cause distress
There was talk in Cairns North Queensland of a new museum. My thought is why not cut to the chase?
Going by irreverant reportage of peoples personal lives as 'news' and consumption of grotty sub-standard television. (Poorly scripted, poorly acted) It's really interesting to consider a Museum of Truth.
Maiia; A Museum of truth doesn't have to be vulgar and scare the children, It doesn't have to dig up private skeletons for voyeuristic public consumption. But rugged facts of North Queensland life can be very enticing to the tourist dollar the all consuming theme of the last 30 years.
A totally brilliant example is The Black Arm Band Troupe's shows.
A Museum of Truth - the idea came from a photo in the Brisbane museum some years ago which referred to 'labourers' local community call 'blackbirded' - I saw a great oppurtunity to tell the truth - all but slavery. No pussyfooting round the fact.
My personal reccommendation would be a folk-lore culture history of Australia with an emphasis on music, and entertainment. Les Medlick and his family with their vaudeville/movie shows on the horse and cart etc. Representing Australia at both national and local level.
Cedar Bays always a popular yarn. Anything but the sanitized an' sterile fodder we're normally fed by conservative administrators who should stick to pen-pushing, and show trust in the community that built the city.
How did women to live in colonial Australia? No fast food, disposable nappies, electicity motor-car. VOLUNTARY SIMPLICITY
What did kids do all day... without electrical devices, day-care and after-school care. What did they eat, how many floggings did they get each week? What was their school curriculum?
What natural remedies can people use- when there is no medical facility. What % of babies died before there was medical facilities available. How do people deal with the same situations today? Wapenamanda
How was post-trauma dealt with in the early days- how did the soldiers feel after Gallipoli? Why do they not want to talk about Vietnam still today? Why do we still not talk about the repurcussions of war on mental health.
How did families generate income? How can we apply the same principles today to revive local industry .
What was the Barbary Coast? What was the game-fishing history? Were there really pirates? What is the history of alcohol consumption in Queensland. Abuse cycles.
What happened to Cairns Murris when the troopers came? What are 'troopers?'
Modern history: What happened to Cairns community when the airport and the next wave came and took over the land from them? How far do we let it deteriorate?
Joh Bjelkie Peterson. Imprisonment, Justice, police corruption, brown paper bags. People Love all this shit. LOL! Apparently.
