Cairns Vibe

MAY 2009 -Cairns art scene is vibrant and thrilling.  Newcomer to the region?

For the young people...

Check out Mofo,  and Billy's Gallery The Crate events which combine with the Upholstery Contemporary Arts- and Digger Street.

Events usually combine live music, community gathering, networking, general hangin' out.  These tend to be innovatiove and interactive shows with performers and musical acts at various levels of accomplishment, like the artists, or DJ or 2.  You will see elders jopin the group from time to time.

Sapphire Bar - has some kool things happening too.

Heads Up   Dominic Johns   Simon Poole

Arts Nexus

For the quieter person ... Coca - known as The Jelly Babies or the Old transport Building in Abbot St - they have heaps of interesting shows including Indigenous works.  Coca exhibitions are free to the public

The Tanks in Edge Hill held the Cairns Art Society Show this year and it was absolutely brilliant!  I'd also recommend the Tanks Art shows to the buyer- I have seen some absolutely brilliant  pieces going for a song.

And the Regional Gallery don't let the 'civic' nature, trick you into thinking it's hill-billy or unfriendly. Lotta these people know what they're on about. I don't like the idea if charging at galleries either but it may be a necessity and its only a few bucks anyway.
