Come Back David Nobbs All is Forgiven - by Maiia

Going Gently- a remarkable book.

David Nobbs reminds me of the great English Author Somerset Maugham.

Kate Copson is a powerful female character. Nobbs understands the foibles and quirks of human beings- and loves us too... like Maugham

The websibook lists GOING GENTLY as Nobbs own favourite of his books. To me this book is ART- the art that is literature.   LIFE Affirming.

Maiia: I came across the work of David Nobbs by chance, Cairns Libraries have a 'style' -genre sticker on the spine of some books, so I was down the LARGE PRINT section looking for smilie faces   - 'Humour' and there was the Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin which carried some distant memory of a TV show of that name.

A page turner, genuinely amusing, Perrin character is a pretty cool old character but it's typical of the era.  So there was a couple of moments of I'm not surabout this 1970s shite...

Going Gently- a remarkable book.

Witi Ihimaera also has strong female characters

"If David had to choose a favourite, this is it. It’s the tale of a woman of 99 who has had a stroke, but, despite this, it is very much a comedy, albeit with much sadness in it. But ultimately, as Kate takes refuge from the reality of her life in hospital by reliving her own life, it is uplifting, for what a life Kate has led. She has had six husbands, even though she is a very moral woman. She has known great joys and sorrows. Born in 1900, she has been affected by two world wars and has almost survived this stormy century. To survive to 99, and have such memories, that is not sad."

Perrin has the moments of brilliance but Going Gently is profound.  A masterwork!
