Ol'Timie

Old Timie times...  Sugar Town times, with.... Les Medlik (without the c)

Wha?  A time in Cairns before talking picture shows?  Before the motor car?

They started out with two horses, Dad built this wagon and they'd take the pictures out to the stations.  The message would get from one cattle station to the next.  They'd put up a screen.  Old hand-turning silent movies.

"Yeah  Dad was a carpenter, he used to play the mouth organ and Mum the violin, she would also sew costumes. Julia Medlik did tumbling.  They'd put on these little shows.  My Aunt Nell Sutcliff/Maitland she taught dancing and put on performance nights too.   My Brother Laurie he'd always be in it.

Well Dad could see this picture show machine was going to be huge so he saved up and bought one. In 1920 he had two taxi's and talking pictures were in.  Dad helped the Beatties set up their business.  Mrs Howe was the piano player  The big sign said "Mrs Howe. C.B.B"  Can't Be beaten."

They were part vaudeville part moving pictures.  All the people from down south would come up, as they did the circuit.  During the 40's Artie Shaw was here.  Harry James was one of the top artists of the time.  I got an offer -5 nights at the Kakoda squad officers club.

The best times were playing with Mary and Paul.  (Zammet)  We had such wonderful times.  -  LES MEDLICK
