Buy Nothing Day

A light hearted look at our needs and our don't needs.

"Apparently Buy Nothing Day was founded in Vancouver by artist Ted Dave and subsequently promoted by Adbusters magazine, based in Canada. The first Buy Nothing Day was organized in 1992 "as a day for society to examine the issue of over-consumption."

In 1997, it was moved to the Friday after American Thanksgiving, also called "Black Friday", which is one of the ten busiest shopping days in the United States. In 2000, advertisements by Adbusters promoting Buy Nothing Day were denied advertising time by almost all major television networks except for CNN. Campaigns started appearing in the United States, the United KingdomIsraelAustriaGermanyNew ZealandJapan, the NetherlandsFranceNorway and Sweden. Participation now includes more than 65 nations.

Cartoonist -Robert Crumb on 'culture':    "It's pathetic, it's pitiful.   The whole culture is one unified field of bought sold market researched everything -you know.   It used to be that people fermented their own culture, you know it took hundreds of years, and evolved over time.  That's gone in America.  People now don't even have any concept that there ever was a culture outside of this thing that's created to make money.... you just get disgusted with humanity after a while for not having more you know - intellectual curiosity about what's behind all this jive bullshit."
